Leo Cancer Care never fails to make an impression at the annual meeting of the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). And this year was no different. With a brand new look unveiled and an event full of exciting announcements, the Leo Cancer Care booth was never quiet with endless streams of visitors excited to find out the latest on their technology and Upright Radiotherapy.
New Collaborations
They started the show with the announcement that Mevion Medical Systems and Nebraska Medicine will be integrating Proton Therapy into the Fred and Pamela Buffet Cancer Center with the installation of the MEVION S250-FIT-a system, which utilizes Leo Cancer Care technology. Mevion Medical Systems has had a partnership with Leo Cancer Care for 3 years and over the last 12 months has made numerous announcements celebrating new installation plans with different healthcare providers across the US. Joining Leo Cancer Care as part of their commitment to be beam agnostic and make proton therapy more accessible are; LinearBeam, ProTom and ProNova Solutions
LinearBeam believes the integration of Leo Cancer Care’s patient-friendly positioning system and CT scanner will advance their work with ERHA (Enhanced Radiotherapy with Hadrons), and will be a huge step forward in making Proton therapy more accessible.
ProTom has experience of treating patients in an upright position as well as retrofitting proton technology into conventional LINAC vaults which makes this a partnership of shared passions and commitment. Read the full press release here.

Sharing some wisdom
Professor Rock Mackie co-founder of Leo Cancer Care gave an engaging presentation on the Leo Cancer Care booth titled ‘Case for Upright Radiotherapy’ on the potential benefits of Upright Radiotherapy covering clinical and economic benefits, which drew in a large crowd.
Also presenting was Jemma Nunn, Clinical Service Manager at Leo Cancer Care. She presented her poster titled ‘The Impact of a Bra upon Inframammary Skin Fold Measurements for Large-breasted Women, Positioned Upright’. Also attending ASTRO was Dr Elizabeth Chabner who co-authored this piece of work and is the designer of the radiotherapy bra that featured in this study.
New Research Group Announcement
ASTRO 2024 was chosen to be the event that launched the Upright Photon Alliance to the world, and it caused quite a buzz. The Alliance is a research group consisting of global healthcare providers; Centre Léon Bérard, Cone Health, IHH Healthcare, Mayo Clinic and OncoRay. Their work will focus on Leo Cancer Care’s photon technology, the groundbreaking research to be undertaken will have a huge impact on the wider radiotherapy world as well as the photon world specifically and will support the advancement of upright radiotherapy into the clinical setting. These exciting announcements are a clear statement from the industry that Upright is unlocking new treatment capabilities and is being recognized as an important step forward in radiotherapy.
The Leo Cancer booth was the platform for unveiling the company’s brand new look, logo and branding that encapsulates their promise to remain patient-centered whilst also showing its growth and responsibility as an industry innovator. The use of vibrant colors shows warmth and a commitment to be ‘unapologetically bold’ and to stand out from the norm. Their use of shapes draws the reader in and the use of natural, candid photos reminds the reader that the work of Leo Cancer Care will always be about making treatment better for people.
