Leo Cancer Care and Orfit Unveil Innovative Upright Immobilisation Prototypes at ESTRO 2026
Collaboration advances precision, reproducibility, and patient comfort in upright radiotherapy
Leo Cancer Care today announces a new collaboration with Orfit, a global leader in patient positioning and immobilisation solutions.
Together, the companies will present four prototype upright immobilisation devices at the upcoming ESTRO Congress in Stockholm, designed specifically for compatibility with Leo Cancer Care’s Marie® and Grace™ upright radiotherapy systems.
This collaboration represents a significant step forward in advancing high-precision treatment delivery in the upright position. By combining Leo Cancer Care’s expertise in upright radiotherapy with Orfit’s leadership in patient immobilisation, the partnership addresses a critical need for robust, reproducible positioning solutions tailored to upright treatment.
The upright approach is rapidly gaining attention for its potential to enhance patient comfort, streamline clinical workflows, and expand access to particle therapy. This collaboration marks an important milestone in enabling these benefits and accelerating the adoption of next-generation radiotherapy techniques in clinical practice.
Two early-stage prototype devices are being showcased:
- Rectangular backrest
- Head and neck backrest
There are two related accessories also being shown:
- Arm support
- Abdominal belt
Each device has been engineered to support stable, reproducible patient positioning while integrating seamlessly with Leo Cancer Care’s upright radiotherapy solutions. Collectively, they are designed to address the unique challenges of immobilisation in upright radiotherapy, supporting both accuracy and patient comfort during treatment.
“Collaboration is key to advancing the field of radiation therapy,” said Ross Tierney, Human-Centred Design Engineer at Leo Cancer Care. “By partnering with Orfit, we are bringing together expertise in upright treatment delivery and patient immobilisation to help enable reliable, high-quality care in this emerging treatment paradigm.”
Orfit Industries brings decades of experience in thermoplastic and positioning solutions, widely used across conventional radiotherapy settings. Extending this expertise into upright applications, Orfit is helping to unlock new possibilities for clinics exploring next-generation treatment approaches.
“Advancing healthcare requires strong industry partnerships that bring complementary expertise together. Our collaboration with Leo Cancer Care reflects this. By integrating our positioning solutions into an upright treatment platform, we are supporting a new way of thinking about patient setup – one that has the potential to be truly transformative for how radiotherapy is delivered in the future. We are proud to contribute to innovations that combine clinical precision, patient comfort, and meaningful progress for the field,” said Emilie Cuypers, CFO – Strategic Alliances, Orfit.
Attendees at ESTRO will have the opportunity to see the prototype devices firsthand and learn more about how upright immobilisation can support the future of radiotherapy.
