Leo Cancer Care and Chabner XRT® Collaborate to Advance Innovation in Upright Radiotherapy to the Breast

Collaboration explores how complementary technologies can improve immobilization, reproducibility, and patient experience in breast radiotherapy .

Leo Cancer Care today announced a strategic collaboration with Chabner XRT to explore how their combined technologies can enhance the delivery of upright radiotherapy for breast cancer.

The collaboration builds on existing joint research into upright breast radiotherapy and focuses on evaluating how Chabner XRT’s radiation therapy solutions, specifically its radiotherapy bra, can complement Leo Cancer Care’s upright treatment platforms. Together, the organizations aim to strengthen patient positioning, immobilization, and treatment reproducibility in upright breast radiotherapy while improving both clinical workflow and patient experience.

Radiotherapy for breast cancer presents well-known challenges, including the mobility of breast tissue, variability in daily setup, and the proximity of critical organs such as the heart and lungs. In the upright orientation, these challenges remain.

Chabner XRT’s approach to breast immobilization is designed to address these challenges directly. Its FDA-cleared, patented radiotherapy bra, developed by a radiation oncologist, supports stable and reproducible positioning, improves tissue visibility for alignment, and has been shown to enhance dosimetry. Clinical studies have demonstrated sub-centimetre reproducibility in setup and optimal beam access for photons and protons when using a radiotherapy bra.

Importantly, these technical benefits are closely aligned with patient experience. Research indicates strong patient preference for upright positioning, with individuals reporting greater comfort and dignity and a reduced sense of vulnerability when supported during treatment.

By combining Leo Cancer Care’s upright radiotherapy platform with Chabner XRT’s immobilization technology, the collaboration will explore how integrated solutions can:

  • Improve setup reproducibility and treatment consistency
  • Support reduced dose to organs at risk, including the heart and lungs
  • Enhance skin outcomes through optimized tissue positioning
  • Increase visibility and accuracy during patient alignment
  • Deliver a more comfortable and dignified patient experience

The partnership reflects a strong alignment in values between the two organizations, with a shared focus on advancing innovation in radiation oncology while prioritizing patient-centric care and improving the patient experience.

“This collaboration strengthens our upright radiotherapy solution for breast cancer,” said Stephen Towe, CEO of Leo Cancer Care.

“Chabner XRT’s technology complements our platform by helping address one of the key challenges in breast treatment – achieving reproducible and stable positioning. Together, we see significant potential to improve clinical precision while delivering a better experience for patients.”

Chabner XRT brings an innovation-led approach to radiation oncology, with technology developed from clinical insight and designed to integrate into modern treatment workflows. This makes it a natural partner for Leo Cancer Care as it continues to expand the capabilities of upright radiotherapy.

“Over the course of my career as a radiation oncologist, I have been involved in every major shift in breast radiotherapy positioning,” said Dr. Elizabeth Chabner, Founder and CEO of Chabner XRT. “I authored the first paper introducing prone treatment, then spent decades refining the supine technique, and now am helping to advance upright positioning.

“Seeing the Chabner XRT bra used alongside Leo Cancer Care’s upright platform is especially exciting because it brings together two innovations whose goal is to make breast radiation treatment more accurate, more comfortable, and more dignified for women. I am deeply proud that the Chabner XRT bra has remained a meaningful part of breast radiation care through each of these seismic shifts in the field.”

The two companies will undertake joint technical evaluations, workflow assessments, and exploratory clinical discussions to better understand how their solutions can be integrated in practice. Leo Cancer Care will also support the introduction of Chabner XRT’s solutions in selected markets.

Leo Cancer Care continues to collaborate with clinicians, partners, and industry stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of upright radiotherapy, focusing on solutions that improve clinical outcomes while delivering a better experience for patients.
